Mr Lim Swee Say Says....

:D Today was the second leg of the CHS lecture series 2009.

Mr Lim Swee Say, Minister, Prime Minister's Office, Secretary-General NTUC (National Trades Union Congress) came to visit his alma mater today. :D

Ok, more like he was invited by the CHS Alumni to give us a lecture, on Singapore's political system. During the lecture, he touched on his rags to riches story (which was both inspirational and funny), Singapore's strategy on staying ahead in this competitive climate and staying afloat during this economic downturn.

The entire talk was filled with laughter. I laughed my brains off, but I managed to retain part of my memory on a particular joke, on his SAF-UK scholarship.

He was about to attain the SAF-UK scholarship. The last requirement was for him to pass the London Examination Board's GCSE English O level examination paper. A day before the exam, he went to he library, picked a 'safe' and simple article and memorised it word for word. The article was, "A Fire" (火灾).

The next day, during the test, after breezing through the first few segments of the test, he finally arrived at the composition section, where he was posed with 5 questions, and he needo nly pick one (Similar to the composition examination papers we do in school). He saw the one word essay, Fire. He remembered muttering "ho seh liao la" (According to context in English: Luck is on my side), and started writing what he had memorised.

He finished the paper with 15 minutes to spare and checked the entire paper. And he came to a realisation. The one word essay was, "Fire" (火), and not "A Fire" (火灾). He thought, "火跟火灾不一样!" He knew the severity of the situation. If he screwed this up, poof goes his ticket to tertiary education. Then, suddenly he saw one of the other questions, "Write about an unforgettable event that happened". Then, he changed the title of his essay to: An Unforgettable Event", and at the end of the essay he added a sentence, "Till this day, it is the most unforgettable event in my life." :D. Owned.

Innovation? haha

And we ended the day with the school song. :D
